What is dBFS?

dBFS(dB Full Scale)

dBFS

dBFS (Decibels Full Scale) is a unit used in digital audio. Given that the maximum value varies depending on the bit depth, 0dBFS represents the maximum signal level for a specific bit depth, illustrating the peak level. To prevent clipping, common reference levels (Rms) are typically set at -18dBFS (for 24 bits or higher) or -12dBFS (for 16 bits).

bitdepth and dynamic range

Bit depths like 24-bit (144dB), 16-bit (96dB), and 48-bit (288dB) indicate the differences in dynamic range. However, in digital systems, irrespective of these bit depths, the signal’s maximum value is defined as 0dBFS and half of the maximum value as -6dBFS. The variance in bit depth is expressed as a difference in signal resolution. A higher bit depth provides more resolution and precision, allowing for a more natural and nuanced representation of the signal.
